Evaluation Q 1 how my media product uses, develops or challenges forms and conventions of real media products.

1) In what ways does your media Product use, develop or challange forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product uses camera work sound and costume in various ways to develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media. In the opening of a film I expect to hear an I-dent or see a logo to represent the production company E.g. paramount. I also expect to see the names of the actors, make up and editing team. I definitely expect to see the editor's name, director and co-directors names. Some times I expect to see the credits on a plain black background or while the movies playing E.g. In The last seduction the credits where on a plain black background and lasted into the early minutes of movie. All of the things I expect to see in a real film such as The last seduction I found that I have them in my product. The last seduction isn't available on art of the title so what i would do is get screen grabs of My final product (The girl friend Experience) and compare it to screen grabs of The last seduction

The film opening (last seduction) shots compared to The Girl Friend Experience shots.

A similarity between the two screen grabs is that they are both presented on a plain black screen. The obvious difference is that they are two very different fonts and are two very different colours.

This shows that my product obviously uses the conventions of a real media product. Both screen grabs from the different opening scenes show who the movie is by.

Both screen grabs show the name of an actor.

Both screen grabs show information i expect to see in the opening of a thriller which is the production company. This shows that my product uses the conventions of a real media product.

Camera work

At the beginning of the movie we used a medium shot to introduce the main character then we used an extreme close up shot to show the smoke coming out of her mouth. This was done on purpose so we had a range of different shots. We also included a panning shot to show the area and to follow the character as she walked up the stairs. A close up of her foot was used to match cut the character stepping on to the stairs.

A close up was used again to show that the character’s feminine side. E.g. when she looked in to the mirror, to put on the lipstick. We added a medium close up shot to show the expression on the character’s face. e.g. when she turned back to look around on the stairs. This was done to add to our range of shots. We had another match cut of the character’s hand opening the gate. A close up shot of her hand was used to show this. We used a mix of medium shots, close ups and long shots to develop our product. The long shot was used to view the character as she walked further and further towards the stairs. Our movie is slow pace but I feel this plays an essential role to the opening of the thriller. To make sure it was not boring we made sure that the sound was a fast pace sound.

Editing

The editing was done with Final cut pro. We wanted to make sure the editing was superb. Therefore, we paid a lot of attention to the editing and made sure everything flowed. There was no parallel edits in our movie. This is because it wasn’t needed. It was all continuity editing from the beginning to the end. This is because there was just one character involved in the story line and everything was taking place in the same place with just that one character.

Sound

The sound was made with soundtrack pro. The sound was created to be suspenseful by making it increase during moments of tension. We also used silence as part of the sound because we felt that this would add to the tension. e.g. during the time the character walked up the stairs into the room it was quiet. By doing this the tension builds up and the audience don’t know what to expect. There was no dialogue used.

Costume

We used sunglasses in our costume to create mystery and hide the character’s identity we felt this adds to a thrilling opening. I felt that skin was an essential costume in our thriller because it gives the audience the idea that the character is a prostitute. E.g. when her dressed was moved off her shoulders by the man. To achieve the sophisticated look for the character we had to find the right costume. (black dress, smoky eyes, black heels furcoat)

DEVELOPS AND CHALLENGES

Our product definitely challenges convections of real media. Why do I say this? Well in real media, women are the homemakers, they cook, clean and look after the children and do not have jobs. Women are decent and not violent. Well our movie says other wise. This young lady (character) is dangerous and has given us clues to let us know this. Her facial expressions. Yes, her facial expressions let us know that she is up to no good that we are yet to find out about. We have also made her appear strong through body language, which is part of the mise on scene and camera shots. E.g. shooting the character from a low angle. She has a job of giving a helping hand to men. The character in our clip appears to be small and vulnerable (e.g. when the man placed his hand on her bare shoulder) which in a way supports convections of real media about women.
