Bait tutorial

In my tutorial lesson i was shown how to use Final Cut Pro which is a film editing software. I learned many different techniques to editing which are :
  • dragging a clip onto the timeline
  • putting input and out on a clip
  • deleting a clip from the timeline
  • filling up a gap between clips
  • Using the razor cut blade
  • adding music to the background
  • Match cutting
Then from a number of different clips i had to make a story of it using these techniques.

photo words activity

on the thursday 28th of january 2010 myself and my group were given a list of words and asked to go out and take pictures of things that represent a word which was part of the list.

I felt that the sky was a very good representation of calm. just like looking into the sea. when we loose a loved one we have a tendancy of looking up to the sky because we believe that they are up there somewhere watching out for us. i also felt that the sky is a good representation of calmness because sometimes i find my self staring away at the movement of the clouds which i find facinating

i felt that this object was a good representation of twist because it was in the shape of a circular motion in order for this material to be folded and then manipulated in order to form this shape it must have been twisted.

This is a brilliant representation of happiness because if they weren't happy they wouldn't want to jump in the air like children would carelessly. They were playing.

in order for me to get to the other end i had to walk through the middle.this is why i thought this picture was a good representation of the word through.

Although this picture looks like lightning it is the sign that it normally used to let people know that they could be electrocuted. so i thought it was a good representation of electrify.

Althought this isn't sharp i felt that it was an Ok representation of spiky because it had little things sticking out from it as we can see in the photo.

Detailed Analysis to the opening scene of Arlington Road

On the 25th of January 2010 we watched and analysed five different clips in class which were Arlington road, Dead calm, Marathon man, Seven and Shinning. i am going to be analyzing in more detail one of these movies.

Arlington Road
Due to the fact that I couldn’t find the exact same clip that i watched in class i am going to be analysing the opening scene to Arlington Road. Arlington Road is a 1999 film which tells the story of a widowed George Washington University professor who suspects his new neighbours are involved in terrorism and becomes obsessed with foiling their terrorist plot.
What happens in this clip?
a young boy am guessing between the ages 13 and 15 is staggering down the centre of a road with blood dripping to his blue converses we are unsure of where exactly the blood is coming from but we know that he is hurt. his eyes are rolling back as if he is on drugs and around his eye lids is red. A man in a silver mini jeep drives in to the road the boys walking on. When he notices the boy walking on the road he comes out the car and tries to get the boys attention. He then notices the boy is hurt and calls out for help and tries to apply pressure to the boy's wound.

Use of Camera
The clip starts off with a medium long shot of someone staggering. At this time we are unsure of who this someone is because it is blurry.

Then it spontaneously moves on to a medium close of the persons shoes which are still blurry. I feel that the reason for this is to show the audience that there is something wrong. The use of the blurry effect lets the audience see from the characters point of view at that very moment. It then moves back to a medium long shot from a low angle of this person staggering. We then see an extreme close up of part of the person’s face at this point we establish the fact that this person is a young boy and is going to play a main role in this movie.
There is a medium close up of the back of the boy’s neck and head which then zooms in to his neck. Then it moves to an extreme close up of his face here we see his eyes roll back and the camera shows us from his point of view the blurry houses.
Again we then see an extreme close up of the side of his face and a medium close up of blood dripping onto his shoes. We then see things from inside the driver's car. There is use of 360 degrees pan when the boy is in the man's arms this lets the audience get a better view of the surrounding.i think it also allows us to see from the man's point of view when he is looking aroung for help.

Sound
It starts off with a non diagetic sound which is slow, calm and repetitive it sounds like a child’s lullaby. This gives it a spooky feel Within that sound we hear the foot steps of the person which is a diagetic sound because it comes from within the frame and within that sound we hear orchestral music which is non diagetic because its been added on to the frame. We hear whispers someone says "do it, hurry up c’mon, run" this gives us a sense of haste then we hear the breathing of the boy who is hurt. The orchestral music increases at a one point and that’s all we can hear this has more effect at that moment therefore increasing our anxiety because we don’t know what’s going to happen next. The beat gets quicker more up beat when the man gets on the scene and then we finally hear dialogue which is the man’s voice. He has an American accent. Kid!
mise en scene
The mise en scene includes the young blonde boy who is covered in blood wearing a blue top and a grey hood on an army green combats and blue converses walking down the center of the street in the day light.

Then there is a white man who is driving a silver car. he is wearing baige trousers and a white top with a pen inside the pocket (this gives us a clue that he is the professor)and a navy blue tie and a wrist watch on his left hand.

The mise en scene also includes blood and mixture of fast pace and slow pace edit. vulrenability and helplessness in the case of the injured boy.
Editing
we get alot of dissolves from one thing to another.e.g. close up of the boys eyes rolling backwards then a dissolve edit to the buildings. we also get match cuts.e.g. A close up of the boy's eyes rolling backwards and a match cut of the blury buildings. Theres a slow motion of the professor walking quickly when he notices that theres something wrong. This has been done on purpose to prolong the moment.

Photo 'words' activity

Electrify

  • To charge with electricity
  • To give an electric shock
  • To give a shock of excitement
  • To equip for the use of electricity/provide with electric power
This image illustrates 'electrify' perfectly because lightening is full of electricity and excitement. People use the word "its electrifying" to describe a specific 'buzzing' and 'energetic' feeling...just like Danny says from the Movie Greece "The power you're supplying, its electrifying"

Photo word activity

In this activity, we were set a task to which we had to choose six different words from a list that was given to us and take picture to what could could represent the following words.

This picture is a a representation of the word electrify and i think this picture represents it as usually this picture is used as a warning to others to be aware as they could be electrocuted.

This picture is a representation of happiness as you could see they are both smiling, holding hands and jumping which shows they are happy because if you weren't happy then you wouldn't
have to the energy to jump or do anything.

The definitions of Suspense and Thriller

What is Suspense?

Suspense is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety when certain things happen. For example suspense is present in a lead up to a big event or a dramatic moment. Alfred Hitchcock, a famous British film maker and producer, was a master of suspense and thrillers. He described suspense when audiences know something bad is going to happen which the actors/actresses are not aware of, and the audiences are powerless to intervene and stop the bad event from happening.

what is suspence and thriller?

what is suspence?-
It is a state or feeling of anxious uncertainty while waiting for something to happen or be known.e.g. a prime example of suspence which is also known as a cliff hanger is eastenders. it always ends at a point where the audience want to know what happenes next.
what is a thriller?-
An exciting story, play or film usually involving crime or spying or using spies to obtain secret information.e.g. a good example of a thriller is collateral. it also has alot suspenseful moments.

suspenseful moments in colllateral
  • When the police stop the taxi-

  • This was a suspenseful moment because we(audience) knew that there was a dead man in the trunk which the police man asked to be opened. we also knew that tom cruise's character vincet was the antagonist who forced jamie's character max into doing something bad.we were put into a state of anxious uncertainy when vincent pulled out a gun just before the police left.

  • vincent turning off the lights in the building-

  • This was when he was out to kill jada pinkett's character annie.vincent turning of the lights put us (audience) in suspence because when the lights are off its scarier because you can't see so therefore can hurt youself or make a racket due to bumping into things. This is what we didn't want for annie so that vincent didn't find out where exactly she was.
  • The chase on the train-

  • This is when jamie's character max tried to get himself and annie away from vincent the antagonist. vincent guessed correctly what train they were on and kept chasing after them from carriage to carriage.we were put in suspence when the train stoped and max was trying to figure out the right time to run out of the train with annie while vincent was looking outside of the train with his gun ready to fire once he saw max or annie.

in conclusion these are very good examples of moments in this movie(collateral) that put us (audience) in suspense.

How is Suspense created in Collateral

Collateral is a crime thriller movie made in 2004 starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. It was directed by Michael Mann and Written by Stuart Beattie.
An example of suspense in Collateral in when the police pulls over Max and Vincent because the windshield is smashed. In this scene what happens is that a man falls in top of the car smashing the windshield and then Vincent persuades Max to help him put the body in the trunk of the car as Vincent is threatening Max with a gun. After as they are driving off, the police seems to notice the windshield and pull them over. Max is very nervous as Vincent is constantly threatening him with killing them if he doesn't succeed in getting rid of them, as the two police officers approach one of them asks for Max's license and registration and then tells him the reason to which they have pulls him over. Max tries to explain by saying that he accidentally hit a dear but either way the police officer asks both Max and Vincent to step out of the car and open the trunk. This is where suspense is created as you start to think that the police officer are going to see the dead body and Vincent would end up killing them but as they are stepping out of the car suddenly the police men are called as something has occurred and leave Max with only a warning to which the audience is also relieved as no-one was killed.

Colletral suspense

COLLATERAL
Collateral is a 2004 crime thriller film. The main actors are Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. It was directed by Michael Mann and written by Stuart Beattie. The simple storyline of the film follows like this; Max picks up a man named Vincent, who was seen earlier exchanging a briefcase with a stranger, then they drive to a tenement building as the story builds up from the scene after Vincent goes up then a dead body drops on the cab of Max. Max later on finds out that Vincent was the murderer. Following on in the film Max and Vincent has a very crimeful and adventuruous time spent together as they face each.

The scene built in the building when Vincent goes after Annie Farrel to kill as she is his next victim, as Max finds this out he goes to help her out to survive. The scene takes place in Annies work place, the scene is full of action and suspense as the audience is aware of what is about to happen to the victim but they can not warm the victim about the event that is about to happen. The lighting is dark in the scene when Vincent puts off the electricity and this also helps create suspense in the scene.
As this thriller is a crime thriller we also spot alot of objects such as guns, knives, blood and many more in the mise-en-scene which indicates the main aspects of crime and suspense, we also notice cliffhangers as an aspect of suspense.
