Evaluation

1 – in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The opening of my thriller opening ‘The Girlfriend experience’ uses camera, mise en scene, editing and sound in order to create a thrilling title sequence.

We use the example Collateral which is a crime thriller movie to which is directed by Stuart Beattie. My group and I used the idea of the opening sequence from Collateral to help us we our own thriller. Both movies have some of the same conventions but are used very differently.

In the opening of Collateral we see to of the actors which are Tom Cruise, the main character, and Jason Statham walking in what appears to be an airports and as they are walking the end up hitting the side of each other and both of them drop their briefcase on the floor and say a few words to each and then walk away in opposite directions.

Editing (Length of shots, transitions, continuity/parallel)

We used Final Cut Pro to edit our opening sequence, we included fades both in and out and also we added dissolves so that the cut wouldn’t be too fast. The beginning of the film is a bit slow to create suspense and towards the end the editing moves faster therefore would build up the tension as it started with a slow place and then went faster. The film had a lot of match cuts.

Sound (Music, Dialogue, FX)

We used SoundTrack Pro to create our own music for our film. No dialogue was used in our film so that the audience as they could not listen to what was happening would watch to see what would happen next.

Camerawork (Angels, distances, framing)

We used a variety of different camera shots such as medium shot and lots of close ups. In the beginning of our film we used an establishing shot of the area and panning was also used to that the audience would see the surroundings.

We started of by using a long shot of the character smoking and then would use a close up to what she was doing.

Mise en scene (Location, props, costume, lighting)

The location of where we filmed was in Shoreditch. This was a good location to film as not many people were there and it builds up the scene as not many people are there so they know something is about to happen. The props we used were cigarette, handbag and lipstick. The costume and the style and appearance of the characters was classy but with an edge, she wore a furry coat, dress, black heels and Tights which made her seem like a hooker.

Credits

We credits and titles of our title sequence was done on Livetype which is a software program developed by Apple to create animated title sequences for video projects.

2- how does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main character of our film is a serial killer dressed as a hooker to which we got the idea from the film The Last Seduction as in the movie the main character is a prostitute.

3&4- what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?

There are a number of ways to distribute my media production such as youtube.

Youtube is a video-sharing website to which user may upload and share their videos with others therefore student would use youtube as a way of showing others their video and hope they would response positively towards their video. For example in youtube I found a video to which a previous media student had uploaded and has had 2897 hits on their video .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPXaysjZbkA

Youtube is the best way of getting any video footage seen by others worldwide and people can also comment on your work. Another website to which student could upload their video in Vimeo which is a video-centric social networking site

Facebook is a social networking website used globally by all ages. This site is usually used so people could communicate with their friends and families and its also a good way of advertising by creating a fan page so that other may see my video and could also shows others.

Our movie was aimed at older people both female and male from the age of 18 and over as there would be violence and sexual scene to which would not be suitable for youngsters.

5- who would be the audience for your media product?

Out target audience would be aimed at both men and women as our film is about crime and killing therefore would attract a male audience and the main character is a female, which may attract a female audience also as usually the bad guys would be men.

6- What have your learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

By Amy:

1) Choose one aspect of film language that has been used especially well in this movie an say why The shots used in this thriller were done really well, I Also thought the shots when meltem looks into the mirror. The fades at the beginging of the film during the tracking shots flowed nicely.

2) Choose one aspect of film language that could be improved in this movie and explain how

I think the role of the main charater could be inproved or portrayed more clearly, because it is not entirely clear whether it is her choice to work as a prostitute or she is being forces, abused and uncomfortable with her work.

3) Can you recognise any stereotypes in this movie?

The stereotypes I recognised in this movie is a girlfriend/escort/prostitute

4) Can you think of any intertextual references with any other movies when you watch this movie? Explain.

This film is similar to a book called candy, which was Banned upon its initial publication, the now-classic Candy is a romp of a story about the impossibly sweet Candy Christian, a wide-eyed, luscious, all-American girl. Candy –– a satire of Voltaire’s Candide –– chronicles her adventures with mystics, sexual analysts, and everyone she meets when she sets out to experience the world, written by terry southern and mason hoffenborg.

5) Who do you think would be the audience for this movie?

The audience for the movie would be an 18+, as from the end of this thriller opening it began to become un appropriate for young ages. I would also think the audience for this film would be mostly women.

6) Write down 5 words which would describe this film

Sexual, suspenseful, glamorous, thrilling, mysterious

7) What sort of institution do you think would release this movie

I think this film would be submitted on the internet or be a small budjet film company.

Looking back at you preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
By looking back at my preliminary task i can clearly see that i have improved many skills to film clips from different shot angles and put them together to make a movie, as well as putting clips together to produce a movie i am also confident in adding sound and edit the movie. the task also gave me confidence as i had to take role in the movie, working as a whole group we discovered how hard and time taking it was to produce a media product.
As we watched the movie as a class we recieved audience feedback and comment on how they found the movie as a whole and what strenghts and weaknesses they noticed...

Who will be the audience for your media product?

Our movie is targeted at over 18 men and women. the main character is a sexy female who is attractive and appealing which may attract both genders, female audiences may look up to her as a role model as they may want to look like her and male audiences will be attracted by her sexy looks. As the movie has some violence this will get the male audiences to enjoy the movie as they are mostly interested violence and action.

How will you attract/address your audience?

The audience for our movie is 18 and over as there is a lot of sexual references, violence, blood etc. So it is most suitable for older audience to watch the movie as they will understand the storyline much better without getting effected. The age group targeted at will reach to the movie easier whereas under 18s will not as the movie will have a certificate of 18over.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media produst and why?

Our Thriller Movie opening is a low budget film so companies such as Paramount or Warner will not be interested in distributing our movie as they are a large distribution companie. So as a result just like other low budget film makers have advertised their products through the net by sharing their movie on things like facebook, youtube, blogger etc, we will start to advertise our movie this way. It will be more usefull to use these types of materials to advertise through media because our film is aimed at people who spend time on media, films, internet, so it will reach to the audience in confidence.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think that the character from the movie The Last Seduction will be a good example to use as its the reference to our movie. The similarities of the female character in The Last Seduction and the character in our movie is that they both have feminine looks with cheeky smiles on their face, they both look posh, smart, sexy and appealing to catch male attention. The difference between the two characters is that they have different job roles and the character in The Last seduction is more older fashioned compared to the character in our movie opening as she is dressed modern.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Mise en scene:
Our thriller opening used good use of props, costume, lighting and location as they all linked up to a thriller convention. The location of the movie opening was in Shorditch which was a good urban London area which Londoners can relate to as it is a setting of a normal everyday life. We used props to make the actor look smart as well as appealing, for example a glittery bag high heels, tights and a fur coat. As another prop we was going to use a knife in her bag to show that she’s a secret killer but we thought that it will too classic and give away the whole point.

Camera:
At the beginning of the title sequence we used an establishing shot to show the location and the area which was conventional as it sets the scene. We used a variety of different shots such as long shots, low angle, high angle, close up, tracking shot etc. The use of different shots made the opening movie more professional and linked up as the audience sees every detail of what they are meant to see. As we wanted our movie opening to be clear and professional, we did not use any zooming as we filmed because we didn’t want to lose any marks.

Editing:
We edited our movie on final cut pro on Apple Mac computers which helped us to match cut our movie and we found a good variety of different types of edits. We added transitions (e.g. fade) in few places of our movie to link up the clips and add a smooth texture. The movie was edited as fast pace but it slowed down towards the end as we wanted it to be stronger as it was the main part which left a cliff hanger.

Credits:
We added the credits from Live Type with an outstanding and clear font, the colour of the font was white but only changed two letters to red which relates to the romantic and thriller convention. I think this made a strong effect as its eye catching and appealing.
